The working principle of the indexer is that the indexing cam installed in the input shaft connects with the output turret, and the cam roller radially embedded in the circumference of the output turret makes linear contact with the taper support rib of the cam on their respective slopes.

When the input shaft rotates, the cam roller rotates the output turret according to the given displacement curve, while rolling along the slope of the rib. In the area where the rib and the end face of the cam are balanced, that is, within the static range, the roller engages its shaft, but the output turret itself does not rotate. The tapered support rib usually contacts two or three cam rollers so that the rotation of the input shaft can be evenly transmitted to the output shaft. If there is a lack of smoothness between the cam surface of the tapered support rib and the cam roller, the indexer will be damaged. The phenomenon of rotational unsmoothness can be eliminated by adjusting the distance between the shafts. The cam roller and cam can be brought closer to the elastic zone by adjusting the preload to enhance the rigidity of the indexer. Its structure and function are the optimal performance of the combination of indexing cam and cam roller, which can perform high-speed operation.

DD motors generally have high-resolution encoders, allowing them to achieve a higher level of accuracy than ordinary servos. Because of the direct connection method, the positioning error caused by the mechanical structure is reduced, ensuring process accuracy. For some camshaft control methods, on the one hand, it reduces the dimensional error caused by mechanical friction, and on the other hand, it also reduces the noise during installation and use. The working principle of a DC torque motor is the same as that of an ordinary DC motor, except for its structure. In order to generate a large torque and low speed at a certain volume and armature voltage, DC torque motors are generally made into a flat structure, and the ratio of armature length to diameter is generally around 0.2, with many pole pairs. In order to reduce the fluctuation of torque and speed, a larger number of slots and commutator segments are selected. Permanent magnets are usually used to generate a magnetic field. The stator is a slotted ring made of soft magnetic material, and the slots are also used as commutator segments. The ends of the slot wedges extend out of the slots.

In the customization process of the cam indexer, the number of stations is fixed. Except for the 360-degree drive angle with a servo motor, the rest cannot be divided by personnel, while the DD motor can stop at any angle as required. The load of a larger indexer can be 1 ton or more, while the DD motor has a relatively lighter load and is more expensive, making it more suitable for equipment with smaller loads and smaller spaces. The control of the cam indexer is relatively simple, and ordinary motors or speed-regulating motors can meet the requirements.
