Cam indexers are widely used in automated production lines and various general-purpose mechanical equipment in packaging, printing, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, tobacco, electronics, glass ceramics, and automobile manufacturing. As a core transmission device in automated machinery, cam indexers play a vital role.
Cam indexers are also known as cam indexing devices, intermittent indexers, or cam indexing mechanisms. They are currently one of the most reliable and stable intermittent transmission mechanisms in the world. This mechanism converts continuous input motion into intermittent indexing motion. The cam on the input shaft meshes without clearance with the indexing wheel on the output shaft. The curved section of the cam profile drives the indexing wheel to rotate, while the straight section keeps the indexing wheel stationary and self-locking.
The connection between the input and output shafts of a cam indexer requires attention to axial alignment and the avoidance of any gaps. Gears, couplings, pulleys, sprockets, and rotary tables can be used. Depending on the application, the input shaft can be equipped with a positioning cam and sensor, brake, or electromagnetic clutch, while the output shaft can be equipped with a torque limiter.
Typically, for every 360° rotation of the input shaft, the output shaft completes one indexing movement. The ratio of the output shaft's running time to its stationary time during an indexing movement is determined by the cam's drive angle. The drive angle refers to the angle of input shaft rotation required to drive the output shaft's indexing movement.
